Save Avon Crest – First Public Event

On December 13, 2022 an overflow audience of more than 60 attended a public event at the Queen’s Inn hosted by Save Avon Crest.

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance owns Stratford’s first public hospital, Avon Crest (1891, architect George F. Durand), and intends to demolish the building.

Howard Shubert chaired the event and began by providing the historical context and highlighting three reasons to save Avon Crest from demolition: architecture and heritage; environment; and wasted opportunity for growth and development.

Three experts then expanded on these points: Dr Thomas Strickland, architect and Professor in the McEwen School of Architecture, Laurentian University.

Robert Lemon, architect and former senior heritage planner for the city of Vancouver.

London-based preservation architect Ed van der Maarel (a+LiNK Architecture)
